April 13 will see less SFTARC members at the Saturday morning breakfast in Olathe. Dark and early on April 13, over half a dozen SFTARC operators will be heading for the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City, Kansas, located in the heart of Kansas' Flint Hills region. The goal is to have two or three HF stations up and operational from thel Tallgrass by 10 am, operating on 40m, 30m and 20m--and perhaps 17m if propagation should be favorable.
Target operating frequencies are: 7.245, 10.118, 14.280 and 18.145 MHz.
While this is the SFTARC’s forth year operating from the Tallgrass, this will be the first year we are operating as part of the POTA (Parks on the Air) program. The Tallgrass is already registered with POTA and is assigned the designator K-3673. SFTARC operators plan to operate until about 2 pm, then make the 100-mile drive back home. Unlike our previous operations at the Tallgrass, this year’s activity will not be associated with the Junior Ranger Day, due to the Tallgrass not participating in that event this year.
Joe, KR0UT, has recently registered the SFTARC with the POTA, opening the door for possibly more operations from state and national parks, including the Santa Fe, Oregon and California wagon trails famous from the late 1800s.
